Choose Your Edinburgh Christmas Tree

Nordmann Fir Christmas trees EdinburghShop Nordmann Fir

Nordmann Fir

Our most popular tree. Soft needles, full symmetrical shape, excellent needle retention. The Nordmann Fir holds its needles for weeks, so it suits a long festive season. Good for homes with children or pets. No scent. A safe pick for most Edinburgh homes.

Norway Spruce Christmas trees EdinburghShop Norway Spruce

Norway Spruce

The classic real Christmas tree with a strong pine scent. Needle drop is faster than the Nordmann Fir, so keep it watered from day one. Strong branches hold heavy festive decorations well. A proper traditional look at a lower price.

If you would rather choose a tree in person, the Lothians have several growers. Dalmeny Christmas Trees at West Craigie Farm near South Queensferry sells fresh cut trees daily from late November. East Lothian Christmas Trees at Beanston near Haddington lets you choose a growing tree and have it cut fresh, or pick from the cut stock. Caring Christmas Trees runs pickup points across the city and gives its profit to charity.

A Lothian farm makes a good morning if you want to see the tree first. The cut trees and potted Christmas trees sell fast at the December weekends.

If the drive out is more than you fancy, leave it to us. Good Elf brings a fresh tree to your door across Edinburgh on the date you choose. No roof rack, no queue, no needles in the boot.

Caring For Your Edinburgh Christmas Tree

Cut about an inch off the base before you put the tree in its stand. This reopens the vessels that sealed during transport and lets the tree drink. Fill the stand with water on day one and top it up every day. A tree in a warm room drinks about a litre a day.

Keep the tree away from radiators and direct sun. Heat dries a tree out fast. The slower it dries, the less needle drop you will see.

A freshly cut tree in good shape and kept well can last six weeks. The Norway Spruce needs more water than the Nordmann Fir. If the base runs dry even for a day, the tree seals over and needle drop speeds up. Check the stand every morning.

A real Christmas tree is good for the environment. We source from British growers with sustainable plantations. Every tree goes through a ten-year growing cycle. After harvest, we plant a new sapling in its place.

The City of Edinburgh Council collects real Christmas trees from late December into January, free from your street or with your first January garden waste collection. Check the council website for your collection day. Remove all decorations first. You can also drop a tree at any Household Waste Recycling Centre, or compost it at home if you have garden space.

Edinburgh at Christmas

Edinburgh wears the festive season well. The castle sits above cobbled streets and Georgian terraces, and the whole place takes on a glow once the lights go up. A walk through Princes Street Gardens with the castle lit behind you is hard to beat at this time of year.

The Christmas lights along George Street, Princes Street and Castle Street come on from mid-November at the Light Night switch-on, with music at the Ross Bandstand and a visit from Santa. A real tree in the window of a New Town flat is part of what makes the season feel right here.

Edinburgh's Christmas Market

Edinburgh's Christmas runs across the city centre from mid-November into early January. The market stalls gather in East Princes Street Gardens with food, gifts and seasonal drinks. St Andrew Square hosts Santa's Stories, a big wheel and a large lit tree trail. Check the Edinburgh's Christmas website for the current programme.

Ice Rink on George Street

The ice rink on George Street runs from late November into early January, with real ice and sessions you book online. Skating under the lights with the city around you is a good evening out for families. The covered rink sits beside market stalls and funfair rides.

Carol Service at St Giles' Cathedral

St Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile holds its carol service in December, with readings and music that trace the journey to Christmas. The cathedral fills early, so arrive in good time for a seat. Carol concerts and candlelit services run at churches across the city through Advent.
