If you would rather choose a tree in person, the country around Cambridge has good farms within reach. Burwash Manor at Barton, just off the A603 three miles from the centre, sells freshly cut English trees and living trees you can plant out later, with saws provided. Farmer Freeman at Histon lets you pick your own or have one of the team choose it for you. Willow Grange Farm at Chittering on the Ely Road stocks fresh cut trees and potted trees through December too.

Caring For Your Cambridge Christmas Tree

Take a fresh cut off the base before you stand the tree. About an inch is enough. This reopens the vessels that sealed during transport and lets the tree drink. Fill the stand with water on day one and top it up every day. A tree in a warm room can drink a litre a day.

Keep the tree away from radiators and direct sun. Heat dries a tree out fast. The slower it dries, the less needle drop you see. A fresh tree kept well can last six weeks. If yours goes up on the 1st of December, it should still look good on Christmas Day.

The Norway Spruce needs more water than the Nordmann. Check the stand every morning. If the base runs dry even for a day, the tree seals over and stops drinking. Once it stops drinking, needle drop speeds up. Top the water up before bed and again when you wake.

After Christmas, Cambridge City Council takes real Christmas trees in your garden waste bin in January, with collections moving to a monthly pattern over the festive period. Remove all decorations first and check the Cambridge City Council website for your date. The Arthur Rank Hospice charity collection picks up trees across the CB1 to CB5 postcodes for a donation. You can also compost a real tree at home if you have the space.
